A Texas man faces almost four decades in prison after he fatally shot his girlfriend, claiming it was an accidental discharge while she was in the bath.

Twenty-five-year-old Donevyn Bowie received a 38-year sentence after admitting to murdering 21-year-old Shamiah Allen in San Antonio.

According to a release by the Bexar County District Attorney, the couple argued intensely over money matters before Bowie fired two shots at Allen, hitting her in the head as she bathed.

"This unprovoked violent act took a life in the heat of anger," noted District Attorney Joe Gonzales.

"Today's verdict holds the individual accountable and demonstrates our firm stance on justice for those impacted by domestic abuse."

ABC affiliate KSAT mentioned police were called around 9:30pm on December 15, 2023, to The Ridgeline at Rogers Ranch Apartments, situated on the 3200 block of North Loop 1604 West.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Allen with gunshot wounds. She was quickly transported to the hospital, where her death was confirmed by medical professionals.

Bowie stayed at the site and police took him into custody. He later asserted that he did not mean to shoot her.

The trial was scheduled for earlier this month, but the defendant decided to plead guilty instead.

According to her obituary, Allen hailed from Atlanta, Georgia.
