A Texas community is in shock following the death of Lindsay Velasquez, a primary school assistant principal and mother of three who was fatally shot inside her home.

Police responded to a report of an accidental shooting in the 1000 block of Sproles Drive, Benbrook, at approximately 7:30 p.m. on 17 April.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the 42-year-old unconscious with a gunshot wound to the face. She was rushed to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has since confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head.

The victim's husband, 39-year-old Alberto Velasquez, was arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with the killing.

While the shooting was initially reported as accidental, authorities have not publicly detailed the specific events leading up to the tragedy.

Both the victim and the suspect were employees of the Fort Worth Independent School District, which issued a statement expressing deep sadness over the "tragic off-campus incident."

Alberto Velasquez was reportedly released on bond as the investigation into the fatal incident remains ongoing.

Lindsay Velasquez was in her second year as an assistant principal at Luella Merrett Elementary School. A fundraiser created to support her three daughters described her as having a "special way of making people feel truly seen and cared for."

The loss has left a profound void within the school district and the local neighbourhood. Looking ahead, the school district plans to provide counselling services to students and staff as they navigate this significant loss during the final months of the academic year.
