Meta unveils new Insights tab showing topics teenagers discuss with AI

Meta has introduced a new layer of transparency to its parental supervision hub, allowing parents to see the specific topics their teenagers discuss with Meta AI.

The updated "Insights" tab provides weekly reports categorising interactions across Facebook Messenger and Instagram into broad themes such as school, entertainment, and health.

While the tool does not display private message dialogues, parents can explore subcategories; for instance, the "Health and Wellbeing" section highlights whether a teen is asking about fitness, physical health, or mental health.

The feature is currently live in the UK, US, Australia, Canada, and Brazil, with a global rollout scheduled for next week.

The launch follows a significant legal setback on 24 March 2026, when a New Mexico jury found Meta liable for endangering minors and ordered the company to pay $375 million in damages.

This landmark verdict marked the first time the tech giant was held legally accountable for failing to protect children from exploitation and platform-induced mental health distress.

In January, Meta proactively suspended teen access to its celebrity-modelled AI characters—such as those based on Snoop Dogg and Paris Hilton—amid allegations that the personas could engage in inappropriate dialogue.

With those characters now paused pending a comprehensive redesign, Meta is focusing on guiding parents through its core AI product.

Alongside the new data, the company is providing "suggested conversation starters" to help families discuss AI use constructively.

These updates align with Meta's 2025 commitment to building robust safety guardrails following intense pressure from state attorneys general and child safety advocates.
