Adrian Grenier has revealed why his planned cameo in the upcoming sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2 ultimately never materialized, saying the production simply ran out of time.

Grenier, who famously played Nate Anne Hathaway’s onscreen boyfriend in the 2006 original, said there were early discussions about bringing the character back for a brief appearance in the sequel.

However, scheduling constraints during production prevented it from happening.

“I had an idea about sneaking him into a cameo, and in the end, it was just too late in our production schedule to make it happen,” Grenier told Entertainment Weekly.

Director David Frankel, who returned to helm the sequel, echoed that explanation, noting that filming wrapped less than a month before the movie’s release window, leaving no time to incorporate additional scenes. “There wasn’t time,” Frankel said.

Grenier declined to elaborate on what his character’s return might have involved, adding, “No, I probably shouldn’t say.”

The actor recently admitted in an interview with Page Six that he was disappointed not to be contacted about joining the sequel, though he acknowledged there was past criticism surrounding his character.

“Obviously, it was a disappointment that I didn’t get the call to be in the sequel,” Grenier said. “But I also understand there was some backlash with Nate.”

While Grenier will not appear, the sequel is set to reunite several original cast members, including Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and Hathaway.

Reports also suggest that Sydney Sweeney filmed a brief cameo that was ultimately cut for creative reasons.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 2.
