Elon Musk and Sam Altman face off in high-stakes federal courtroom trial
Elon Musk claims Sam Altman manipulated him into funding a non-profit mission
The digital rivalry between Elon Musk and OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman has escalated from social media exchanges to a federal courtroom in Oakland, California.
Overseen by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, the month-long trial investigates Musk’s allegations of fraud and breach of contract.
Musk alleges Sam Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman "manipulated" him into donating $40 million to establish OpenAI as a non-profit, only to pivot to a for-profit model to "enrich themselves and Microsoft."
University of San Diego professor Sarah Federman noted that "Musk and Altman are so big, so larger than life, and so unrelatable," which adds to the public intrigue.
Musk argues the organisation abandoned its mission of developing artificial general intelligence for humanity's benefit to focus on "maximising profits."
Consequently, he is seeking the return of billions in "wrongfully gained" funds to the non-profit arm and has called for the removal of Sam Altman from his leadership position.
"If Musk wins, it could result in the defeat of a key competitor in the race to AGI," stated law professor Rose Chan Loui, adding that "whoever wins that race will have a lot of power."
Conversely, OpenAI maintains the lawsuit is driven by "jealousy and regret" after Musk’s 2018 departure.
While the trial highlights the intense race for technological dominance, it also underscores Musk’s continued involvement with his own startup, xAI, and his historical contributions to the foundational landscape of modern artificial intelligence development.
