Anthropic has significantly increased its public estimates for token spending tied to Claude Code, revealing that enterprise developers now cost an average of $13 per active day, more than double the $6 daily estimate listed before April 16. 

The company also now says 90% of users spend under $30 a day, up sharply from the previous $12 threshold. Monthly enterprise costs are estimated at $150 to $250 per developer.

The revisions were made quietly on Anthropic’s Claude Code documentation page, with no formal pricing announcement, but they were quickly spotted by tech analyst Ed Zitron, who flagged the shift on X as a sign that the economics of AI coding assistants may be rapidly changing.

At the center of the issue are tokens — the numerical units large language models use to process prompts, context windows, and generated responses. 

For agentic coding systems like Claude Code, where the AI can autonomously inspect files, reason through bugs, and execute multi-step programming tasks for long stretches, token usage balloons far beyond standard chatbot conversations.

Anthropic’s revised estimates offer one of the clearest public acknowledgements yet that these AI agents are proving far more compute-hungry than many subscription plans were built to support.

Last week, users noticed that Claude Code briefly appeared unavailable on Anthropic’s $20 Pro tier, prompting backlash from developers who feared the company was moving the product behind a higher paywall. 

Anthropic later said the change was only a limited test affecting roughly 2% of new users, but executives admitted the current plans “weren’t designed for this level of engagement.”

Anthropic head of growth Amol Avasare acknowledged that subscriber behavior has changed dramatically as long-running AI agents become a daily workflow rather than an occasional feature. 

The company has already introduced weekly usage caps and tighter restrictions during peak traffic as it searches for a sustainable balance between user demand and infrastructure costs.

The pricing shift also comes as Anthropic scales at breakneck speed. The company’s annualised revenue has surged to roughly $30 billion, fueled largely by enterprise adoption of Claude and Claude Code, while investors including Alphabet Inc. and Amazon continue pouring billions into the AI startup’s compute expansion.

Yet for developers, the quiet documentation update signals a broader truth emerging across the AI industry: smarter autonomous assistants may be transformative, but they are also turning into one of the most expensive forms of software labor Silicon Valley has ever tried to subsidize.

As AI agents move from novelty to necessity, the era of cheap unlimited intelligence may already be ending.
