Expert explains science behind unpleasant gas from high-protein diets
Gut bacteria produce hydrogen sulfide when breaking down specific amino acids
Gym-goers are increasingly turning to protein supplements for post-workout recovery, yet many encounter the socially uncomfortable phenomenon of "protein powder farts".
Tavishi Dogra, a health journalist, explores why these products cause flatulence. Nutritionist Avni Kaul explains that as the body digests protein—particularly from red meat, eggs, or beans—it breaks down sulfur-containing amino acids.
"When protein isn't fully digested, bacteria in the intestines can ferment it and create smelly gas. Protein powder farts are harmless, but they can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. To help with digestion and reduce gas, you can adjust your diet and eat more fibre," says the expert.
Types of protein
While protein itself is not the culprit, supplements often contain lactose or additives like sorbitol. Options include:
- Whey isolate: Contains less lactose than concentrate, aiding those with intolerances.
- Plant-based proteins: Pea and rice proteins are usually easier to digest.
- Egg protein: Generally well-tolerated and typically does not cause gas.
How to reduce protein powder farts?
To improve gut health, experts suggest the following methods:
- Swap your protein powder: Move from whey concentrate to isolate or plant-based options.
- Consider adding herbs to your diet: Ginger or peppermint tea can ease bloating.
- Chew your food slowly: This prevents swallowing excess air during meals.
- Increase your fibre intake: Focus on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Maintaining hydration is also essential for supporting digestion. By selecting powders with digestive enzymes and avoiding artificial sweeteners, athletes can refuel without experiencing significant abdominal distress.
