Brooke Shields calls watching daughters grow into adults a 'bizarre' experience
The actress described watching her daughters become independent as a 'bizarre' but proud experience
Brooke Shields opened up about the emotional experience of watching her daughters step into adulthood and build their own identities, calling it a “bizarre” yet deeply rewarding transition.
The 60-year-old actress spoke to People at the New York City premiere of Acorn TV’s upcoming series You’re Killing Me, where she attended alongside her daughter Rowan Henchy, 22, who even took on interviewing duties on the red carpet.
Shields shares Rowan and 20-year-old Grier Henchy with husband Chris Henchy. During the event, she reflected on how surreal it feels to see her children growing into confident, independent adults.
“It’s a bizarre feeling,” she said, describing the shift from parenting young children to watching them carve out their own paths.
“You know, they’re okay and then you just get so proud of them, not of anything you did, but for being their own people and being confident and trying things they didn’t know they could do.”
The actress added that her pride comes from observing their independence rather than any sense of personal credit, emphasizing how much she admires their confidence and willingness to take on new challenges.
At the premiere, Shields wore a striking red leather dress, while Rowan opted for a seafoam green pantsuit, reflecting the pair’s coordinated yet individual style.
The mother-daughter duo has increasingly appeared together at public events in recent months, including a benefit gala earlier this year where they wore coordinated gowns.
They also collaborated on a Mother’s Day segment, where Rowan interviewed her mother and joked about her being a “professional nagger,” prompting Shields to humorously respond, “No, I encourage.”
Shields also shared a heartfelt reflection on motherhood during the interview, saying the day Rowan was born marked the moment her life felt “fully real,” adding, “You make me the happiest being a mother. I’m just so proud of who you are.”
