Bill Bray, a retired Los Angeles police officer, has returned to the spotlight as fans rediscover his pivotal role in Michael Jackson’s life.
Having joined the Jackson 5 in the early 1970s, Bray was much more than a security guard; he was a father figure and friend.
This profound bond is a central theme in the new biopic, Michael, where Bray is portrayed by KeiLyn Durrel Jones. The film illustrates how Bray provided a source of strength against the star's overbearing father, Joe Jackson.
The depth of their relationship was highlighted in a viral letter originally reported by TMZ. Expressing his gratitude, the singer wrote to Bray: "Joseph never ever had time for me; he only saw me as a way for him to make money."
Jackson poignantly added, "Thank you for being a father." This devotion caused significant tension, as Joe Jackson often complained that the bodyguard kept him away from his son.
Bray remained loyal until his death in November 2005. Despite a mysterious falling out in the 1990s, his wife, Gail, told Fox News that Bray refused to disparage the star, stating, "I don't want to say anything that would hurt Michael."
Even while battling cancer in Florida, his loyalty remained unshaken. Previously, Bray had accompanied the singer on every major world tour, managing both his physical safety and intricate business affairs.
Future projects, including the film Michael, will continue to explore this essential chapter of pop history.
