  • Nick and Sophie Simmons had to negotiate for cash by performing household chores.
  • The rocker credits his strict parenting for his children's independent success in the music industry.

KISS bassist Gene Simmons has declared that he refused to provide his children, Nick and Sophie, with an allowance "for being alive."

The 76-year-old musician, currently promoting his new film Deep Water, argued that funding a child's lifestyle without requiring work is "woke" and detrimental to their development.

Speaking to Us Weekly, Simmons explained that his household operated under strict rules where every "morsel of food" was provided by him, necessitating a system of negotiation and labour for any extra spending money.

"You’re training losers," Simmons remarked regarding parents who offer unconditional financial support. He recalled how his children, now aged 37 and 33, had to propose chores such as taking out the rubbish or cutting the lawn to earn twenty dollars.

The "Detroit Rock City" hitmaker emphasised that he wanted his children to understand that "money doesn’t grow on trees," especially since parental "safety nets" do not last forever.

He credited his own mother’s work ethic in a sweat factory for shaping his uncompromising views on debt and entitlement.

Despite his rigid approach, Simmons expressed immense pride in his children’s professional achievements. Sophie has garnered nearly two billion downloads as a songwriter for artists like Train, while Nick recently finished an album with Evan Stanley.

Both siblings frequently visit their parents on weekends, a fact Simmons attributes to their strong, respect-based upbringing. Previously, the family starred together on the reality series Gene Simmons Family Jewels.

Following the conclusion of the KISS End of the Road World Tour in 2023, Simmons is now focusing on film production and quality family time.
