Kevin Gonzalez dies after making 'dream' reunion with parents detained by ICE
The emotional meeting took place just two days before his death was confirmed by family members
A heartbreaking reunion in the final days of an Illinois teenager’s life has drawn national attention after an 18-year-old cancer patient died just one day after seeing his parents for the first time in months following their release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.
Kevin Gonzalez, who was a U.S. citizen from Chicago, had been diagnosed earlier this year with colon cancer that later spread to his stomach and lungs. Doctors told his family the illness was terminal, according to local reports.
His parents, Isidoro Gonzalez Avilés and Norma Anabel Ramírez Amaya, had travelled from Mexico to the United States after his diagnosis.
However, they were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Arizona on April 14, according to CNN, after authorities said they had previously attempted to re-enter the country without valid authorization.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security later stated that both parents had been denied visas due to prior immigration history, and that Avilés had earlier deportation and criminal-related records, according to reporting cited by NBC Chicago and CNN.
As Kevin’s condition worsened, his family and advocates intensified calls for his parents to be released so they could see him.
With support from the Mexican consulate and lawmakers, an immigration judge in Arizona ordered their release on May 7.
Following their release, the couple returned to Mexico, where Kevin made a difficult but determined decision to leave hospital care in Chicago and travel to Durango, hoping to reunite with them.
That reunion finally took place on May 9, when Kevin embraced his mother in an emotional meeting captured by local media.
His parents described the moment as deeply emotional, with his mother saying she cried while holding him again, overwhelmed by the reunion.
“We managed to make my son’s dream come true: to be with him again, to love him,” his father said in comments reported by NBC Chicago.
He also told reporters he apologized to his son and expressed his love during their final time together.
Kevin’s brother confirmed that the teenager died on May 10, just one day after the reunion.
The case has since sparked wider discussion around immigration enforcement and humanitarian exceptions in urgent medical situations, as advocates point to the emotional final days shared by the family after months of separation.
