Peter Jackson reveals he’s writing long-awaited ‘Tintin’ sequel at Cannes

Peter Jackson has confirmed that a long-awaited new installment in The Adventures of Tintin is officially in development, revealing at the Cannes Film Festival that he is actively working on the screenplay for the upcoming film.

During an appearance at Cannes, the Oscar-winning director shared that he has been collaborating with longtime creative partner Fran Walsh on the project while attending the prestigious festival.

“I’ve been working with Fran on another Tintin script,” Jackson said. “I was writing it in the hotel room here.”

Jackson also confirmed that he still plans to direct the sequel, marking a major update for fans who have waited more than a decade for progress on the franchise.

“It’s an active real thing, and I’m getting back into the Tintin world, and I actually love it,” the filmmaker added.

The revelation comes years after Jackson and Steven Spielberg originally agreed to split directing duties for the Tintin film series. 

Spielberg directed the first movie, The Adventures of Tintin, while Jackson was expected to helm the follow-up.

Reflecting on the delayed sequel, Jackson admitted he feels guilty about not fulfilling the arrangement sooner.

“The deal was that Steven directs one and I direct another,” Jackson explained. “Steven did his film, and then for 15 years later I haven’t made mine. I feel very awkward about that.”

The filmmaker’s comments quickly sparked excitement among fans of the beloved comic-book franchise, which originated from Belgian cartoonist Hergé.

Jackson’s update also arrives as the acclaimed director received an honorary Palme d’Or during this year’s Cannes festivities, recognizing his contributions to global cinema.

Although Jackson confirmed the screenplay is actively being developed, additional details surrounding the sequel’s plot, cast, and production timeline have not yet been revealed.
