Is this the last time we ever see Matt Damon?
Matt Damon stars as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s epic ‘The Odyssey’
Matt Damon has opened up about the intense experience of filming Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey, revealing that he approached the project with the mindset that it could be the final film of his career.
In a new Time magazine profile on director Christopher Nolan and the ambitious adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek saga, Damon reflected on the rarity of leading roles for actors in their mid-50s and the scale of the production.
“There aren’t a lot of people in their mid-50s as protagonists in these epics,” Damon said. “I looked at this like the last movie I’d ever do.”
The Oscar-winning actor emphasized that the approach was not tied to actual retirement plans, but rather the once-in-a-lifetime nature of the project, which he described as one of the most rewarding experiences of his career.
Damon also praised Nolan’s commitment to practical filmmaking, noting that large-scale productions of this kind are increasingly rare in modern cinema.
“Movies like this are not getting made anymore,” he said. “To do this without a green screen, the way that David Lean would have done it, I don’t know anybody, with the exception of Chris, that’s even trying to do that.”
The film, set for release on July 17, is Nolan’s first feature shot entirely on IMAX and was reportedly filmed using expansive practical sets and real-location action sequences inspired by classic cinematic epics.
Damon described Nolan’s hands-on directing style as a defining part of the experience, particularly during physically demanding shoots.
“When you’re uncomfortable, and you are most of the time, physically, just by nature of what’s required to get these shots, if you turn and look over your shoulder, he’s no more than five feet away and doing the same thing without complaint,” Damon said. “There’s something really nice about being a soldier in the foxhole.”
The star-studded cast of The Odyssey includes Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, and Charlize Theron as Calypso, among others.
The profile also confirmed additional casting, including Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, and Travis Scott in the role of a bard.
Despite the film’s scale and intensity, Damon said the experience ultimately reinforced his admiration for Nolan’s filmmaking approach, calling the project a standout moment in his long career.
Charlize Theron, who also appears in the film, previously described working with Damon as “lovely,” adding that his role in the epic is “the part of a lifetime.”
The Odyssey is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17.
