OpenAI has announced a landmark partnership with the Maltese government that will give all residents of the island nation access to its ChatGPT Plus service free of charge for one year — making Malta the first country in the world to launch such a programme.

AI literacy at the heart of the initiative

The primary aim of the initiative is to encourage Maltese residents to enrol in a free AI literacy course. Access to ChatGPT Plus is tied to completion of the course, with the programme expected to gather momentum as more residents work through the training, according to Reuters.

The scheme is set to launch in May and will be open to all citizens residing in Malta.

OpenAI's statement

In a statement, OpenAI said: "We are turning an unfamiliar concept into practical assistance for our families, students, and workers."

Financial details undisclosed

The company has not revealed the financial terms of the agreement with the Maltese government. The long-term success of the initiative will depend largely on how effectively residents are able to put their year of free ChatGPT Plus access to practical use.
