In an ironic turn of events, a New York man who drove to a sheriff's office to pick up a friend following a drink-driving arrest found himself charged with the same offence.

What happened

Antone M. Glionna, 25, of Hagaman, New York, arrived at the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office on Saturday, intending to collect a friend who had just been released following a DWI arrest, according to a press release from the department.

Upon arrival, Glionna failed to park in the designated public parking area, instead driving into a restricted section of the facility.

The error drew the attention of a deputy sheriff, who upon approaching Glionna suspected him of being intoxicated.

Deputies administered standardised field sobriety tests, following which Glionna was placed under arrest for drink-driving.

A revoked licence

A check of Motor Vehicles records revealed that Glionna's driving licence had already been revoked as a result of a prior DWI-related conviction and a chemical test refusal, compounding the seriousness of his situation.

The charges

Glionna was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation in the first degree — a Class E felony — alongside driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher, DWI as a first offence (both unclassified misdemeanours), and unlicensed operation, an infraction.

He was released into the custody of a third party and is due to appear in Glen Town Court at a later date.
