Cardi B has moved to address her public falling out with Latto, issuing a lengthy public apology after the fellow rapper confirmed that her new song references the incident that drove a wedge between them.

Latto confirms the song's subject on The Breakfast Club

On Thursday, 4 June, Latto appeared on The Breakfast Club and confirmed that her track "Gimme Dat" directly references Cardi B. The 27-year-old rapper, whose real name is Alyssa Stephens, opened up about the state of their relationship and the events that preceded the song's creation.

"It's someone I deadass looked at as a friend. Like, I understand this industry shirt first, too. But we was on a texting basis. So I feel like, 'Yeah, you tweeted to the world, but we got each other number.'

"So then probably like two months later, something like that, she did text me, but by that time I'm like, 'I'm not even thinking about that,'" Latto said, adding that the two have not spoken since.

"I'm open to the conversation. When? I don't know cause I got a baby now, life done kept moving," she continued. "The people just now hearing that song but like I made that song when that was a topic in my life. It wasn't no diss, that's just what was happening in my life. Like, you talking about buying Big Mama a bag? I don't need no damn bag."

Cardi responds with a public apology

Following Latto's appearance on the show, Cardi B — real name Belcalis Almánzar, aged 33 — responded with a lengthy post on X, taking direct responsibility for their falling out and addressing the leaked phone call from September, in which she had called Latto a "pussy."

"I truly understand how you feel…and that's exactly why I chose to apologize publicly because the disrespect became public. On that call I didn't even mean to call you that, I didn't mean any harm.. There's a difference in what I said vs what I meant," Cardi wrote.

"What I could have said was you was too forgiving and gave too much mercy in that situation. But it was a heated conversation and I let my mouth get the best of me," she continued.

Cardi also acknowledged that she had been "extremely overwhelmed and emotional" when the call was leaked but accepted that this was not an excuse. She insisted she had made repeated attempts to reach out to Latto privately in the aftermath.

"I spoke with your manager, your sister, and even texted you directly to take full responsibility," she wrote. "I always had love and respect for you! I always wanted to make it right but making it right looks different for the both of us… I wanted to connect with you but you wanted to address it on your album."

How the fallout began

The rift between the two rappers originated from a leaked, heated phone call in September, in which Cardi was heard expressing her frustrations to Ice Spice's manager, James Rosemond Jr. During the call, she made a pointed reference to Latto whilst talking about Ice Spice — real name Isis Gaston.

"I'm not Latto. I'ma beat her the f--- up," Cardi said. "You think I'm pussy ass Latto?"

The leaked call proved particularly awkward given that Cardi had just collaborated with Latto on ErrTime (Remix) for her latest studio album Am I the Drama? (Ultimate Edition). Cardi immediately apologised in the wake of the leak.

"I was ranting and hot at the moment but I f--- with Latto HEAVY," she wrote at the time. "I respect everything about her including her team thats so sweet.. AND NOPE! I'm not too prideful to apologize to somebody I really respect so this my public apology and now ima privately buy her a bag."

Big Mama and the bag lyric

Latto released her latest studio album Big Mama on 29 May, and within it she addressed Cardi's gesture directly in Gimme Dat. "Talkin' 'bout buying Big Mama a bag like my n---- ain't already bought it," she raps on the track.

Two rappers, two new babies

Both women were expecting children at the time the phone call was leaked. Cardi welcomed a son with Stefon Diggs in November 2025, whilst Latto welcomed a daughter with 21 Savage this spring.
