A West Virginia man has been indicted in connection with the death of a 27-year-old woman who disappeared after leaving a bar with him in 2022 and was later found dead in a wooded area, authorities said.

Preston Pierce, 58, was extradited to West Virginia on June 4 after being arrested last month in North Carolina, according to law enforcement officials.

Pierce has been charged with first-degree murder, felony murder, kidnapping, and the disposal of a deceased human body in connection with the death of Gretchen Fleming, who was 27 at the time of her disappearance.

Authorities said Fleming was last seen in the early morning hours of Dec. 4, 2022, leaving a local bar in Wood County, West Virginia.

She reportedly left behind her purse and wallet and was later reported missing after failing to contact family or friends.

Investigators said Fleming’s remains were discovered in Wirt County in September 2025 and were identified through extensive forensic testing.

Police allege that Fleming was last seen leaving the bar with Pierce shortly before she disappeared. Prosecutors have not yet detailed a possible motive.

Pierce was indicted by a Wood County grand jury and is currently being held without bail while awaiting his next court appearance.

According to court records and local reporting, Pierce has also been identified as Darrell Lott and is alleged to be a former police officer.

Parkersburg Police Chief Matthew E. Board said investigators are grateful for the persistence of law enforcement and the support of Fleming’s family throughout the years-long investigation.

“Their strength, grace, and resilience in the face of unimaginable loss have been truly remarkable,” the department said in a statement.

The case remains ongoing as the legal process continues.
