Idris Elba warns Bond franchise against making 007 ‘too woke’ amid casting debate
The 'Luther' star also dismissed past rumours linking him to the iconic spy role
Idris Elba has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding the future of James Bond, issuing a blunt message to filmmakers as speculation intensifies over who will next take on the iconic role.
The actor, who has long been rumoured as a potential successor to James Bond, recently clarified that he was never in contention for the part. However, in a new interview with GQ, he addressed broader concerns about how the character should be portrayed moving forward.
Elba stressed that while Bond remains a global cultural icon, the franchise must remain true to its original identity rather than adapting too heavily to modern trends.
“James Bond was written how he was written for a reason,” he said, adding that although he understood the conversations around representation, audience reception would vary across global markets.
He suggested that not all audiences would accept a Black actor in the role, noting that Bond’s worldwide appeal means the franchise has to consider diverse cultural expectations.
“Bond is big all over the world,” Elba said. “Some markets just don’t go for that.”
The actor also cautioned against what he described as over-modernising the character.
“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke,” he said. “I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism.”
His comments come as the search for the next 007 officially heats up following Daniel Craig’s departure from the role, with speculation continuing over who will inherit one of cinema’s most famous characters.
Elba, meanwhile, reiterated that earlier rumours linking him to the role were unfounded, despite years of fan speculation.
