Actor James Marsden, 52, and his 25-year-old son Jack have joined forces for their first-ever joint brand campaign, starring together in The Macallan's new "Drink of a Generation" whisky initiative, which spotlights the brand's Sherry Oak 25 and 30 Years Old expressions.

Rare father-son appearance in Los Angeles

The pair made a rare public appearance together on Wednesday at The Macallan Villa in Los Angeles to mark the campaign launch, with photos obtained by PEOPLE showing them sharing a toast and posing for pictures at the event. James Marsden wore a black suit with a light blue button-down shirt, while Jack arrived in a brown suit with a black undershirt.

Campaign rooted in family moments

The Macallan Marketing Director Valerie Marks explained the thinking behind the campaign to Marketing Dive, saying it was "really about celebrating special moments with loved ones." She added: "That really stemmed from an insight through some of our social listening, where we saw a lot of comments and conversations around The Macallan. Many times people had been introduced to The Macallan 25 and The Macallan 30, with a grandfather, a parent, a mother, someone within their family…and we kept seeing these stories come up time and time again."

A tradition of toasting milestones

In a campaign video filmed by the father and son, the two reflected on the role whisky has played in their relationship over the years. "I think about the times we actually had a special occasion to toast," said James Marsden. "We kind of created them on our own." The pair discussed moments they had marked with a drink together, including Jack's graduation and his move to Nashville, with James noting that simply spending time together had always been reason enough to celebrate.

James Marsden also took to Instagram to share the campaign with his followers, writing: "Sharing a glass of @the_macallan Sherry Oak 30 Years Old with my son, @jackmmarsden, has become one of our favorite traditions, creating moments that connect us across time. Marsden's family and upcoming projects

In addition to Jack, Marsden has two other children — daughter Mary, 20, whom he shares with ex-wife Lisa Linde, and youngest son William, 10, whom he shares with ex-girlfriend Rose Costa. On the professional front, Marsden recently appeared in the second season of Apple TV's Your Friends & Neighbors, now streaming in full, and is set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which opens in cinemas on 18 December.
