Anya Taylor-Joy opens up about ‘hard-won’ battle on ‘Furiosa’ film
Anya Taylor-Joy shares that it is 'difficult' to talk about her 'Furiosa' experience
Anya Taylor-Joy spoke candidly, though carefully, about her time working with director George Miller on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, saying it remains “difficult” to fully discuss her experience on set.
The actress, who played the younger version of the iconic warrior previously portrayed by Charlize Theron, reflected on the 2024 film while speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, describing the emotional and creative challenges she faced during production in Australia.
“It’s a very difficult conversation to have,” Taylor-Joy said. “If I were to be completely honest about my experience, it would hurt nobody but myself.”
She added that while she was deeply committed to the role, the process required constant advocacy for her interpretation of the character.
“I just advocated and advocated and advocated for her to live up to her name,” she said. “That was my mountain on that movie, and I got it, but it was hard, hard won.”
Creative differences shaped her approach to Furiosa
Taylor-Joy revealed that she spent months on set pushing for changes in how Furiosa’s journey was portrayed, particularly in relation to her character’s emotional drive and fate within the story.
She explained that her vision for Furiosa involved a more direct confrontation with antagonist Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth, including a stronger sense of agency in how she exacted revenge.
Instead, the final film concluded with a more symbolic resolution, something Taylor-Joy has previously suggested differed from her initial expectations for the role.
Taylor-Joy reflects on transformation through filming
Despite the challenges, the Queen’s Gambit star has previously spoken positively about the personal impact of filming in Australia, describing it as a transformative experience.
“I wanted something that was going to challenge my body and soul, and it was definitely that,” she previously told Entertainment Weekly. “What I thought would be difficult was really easy, and what I thought would be easy was actually very difficult.”
She also noted that the experience left her with a lasting appreciation for the environment and the people she worked with.
“I have a soft spot in my heart for Australia forever now,” she said.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was released in 2024 and serves as a prequel within George Miller’s long-running Mad Max franchise.
