Jason Momoa reveals why Lobo holds a special place in his heart
The DC star says playing Lobo has given him the creative freedom he has always wanted
Jason Momoa is embracing his latest DC role with complete excitement, revealing that he considers himself the “number one fan” of Lobo ahead of his debut in Supergirl.
The actor, who will portray the iconic comic-book character in the upcoming DC film, has long expressed his desire to bring the alien mercenary and bounty hunter to life on screen.
Momoa previously campaigned for the role and even pitched himself for Lobo in a message to DC Studios executives James Gunn and Peter Safran when they took over the studio in 2022.
Speaking at a fan event in London, Momoa shared his excitement about becoming the first actor to portray Lobo in live-action.
“I feel like I’m the number one fan of Lobo and I want to do everyone justice,” he said. “As far as legacy goes, I got to play Lobo first, how’d you like them apples?!”
The actor described the role as something he always felt connected to, saying it was a character he admired from a young age.
“It’s really just one of those roles that you were born to play. I loved it as a child and to finally be able to play something like this… it’s surreal,” Momoa explained.
Bringing Lobo to life required a major physical transformation, with Momoa spending around four hours in the makeup trailer before filming each day to become the “unapologetic” character.
He also recalled his first day on set, where he rode a motorcycle during a scene featuring explosions and special effects. After completing the take, he said the reality of finally playing Lobo hit him.
“I slid right in and pulled the cigar and said the first line. I’m like, ‘I’m f**king Lobo!’ It was an honour,” he recalled.
Momoa also praised director Craig Gillespie for encouraging him to take the character further than he expected.
“Like, ‘What?! More?’ I felt so safe and encouraged to just be… this is the freest I’ve ever been in a character,” he said.
The role marks another major appearance for Momoa in the DC Universe after previously playing Arthur Curry, also known as Aquaman.
Starring Milly Alcock as Supergirl, the upcoming film is set to arrive in cinemas on June 26 and will introduce audiences to a new chapter of DC storytelling.
