Anya Taylor-Joy opens up about the difference between TV and films
'The Queen's Gambit' star explains why some stories are better suited for television while insisting her passion for acting
Anya Taylor-Joy has opened up about the differences between working in television and film as she returns to the small screen with Apple TV+'s new limited series Lucky.
The actress, who earned widespread acclaim for her Emmy-winning performance in The Queen's Gambit, said the biggest distinction between the two formats is the amount of time actors have to fully develop their characters.
"The main difference that I find between movies and limited series or television shows is just the sheer amount of hours that you are allowed with a character," Taylor-Joy explained in an interview with People.
While the actress has recently starred in major films including Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Dune: Part Two, she believes some stories simply benefit from a longer format.
"There are certain stories that do best in a limited screen time, and that is a wonderful thing to do for film," she said.
"But there are other stories that just feel like they benefit from having time unpeeling the onion."
Taylor-Joy noted that adapting Lucky into a feature-length film would have significantly changed the story.
"If Lucky fitted the entirety of the seven hours in a film format, it would've made it an entirely different thing," she explained.
Despite the differences between television and film, the actress said her personal approach to acting remains unchanged regardless of the medium.
"I always approach the work the same. I never show up to work thinking I'm making a television show today or I'm making a movie," Taylor-Joy said.
"It's the same interior work and it's the same passion and the same love."
Taylor-Joy's latest project, Lucky, is now available to stream on Apple TV+.
