Getting enough quality sleep is essential for physical recovery, brain function and overall health. According to Dr Kunal Sood, persistent sleep deprivation can affect everything from mood and memory to immunity and food cravings.

In a recent Instagram post, the doctor highlighted five common signs that may suggest your body isn't getting the rest it needs.

1. You depend on caffeine to get through the day

Enjoying a morning coffee is common, but needing caffeine just to function throughout the day may indicate insufficient sleep.

Dr Sood explains that caffeine temporarily blocks adenosine receptors, reducing feelings of sleepiness without replacing the restorative benefits of sleep. Over time, this can create a cycle of poor sleep and increased caffeine dependence.

2. You crave sugary and high-carb foods

Lack of sleep can influence the hormones that regulate hunger and appetite.

According to Dr Sood, sleep restriction may increase levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin while making high-calorie foods more appealing and reducing the brain's ability to resist cravings.

3. You're more irritable than usual

Sleep deprivation can make it harder to manage emotions and respond calmly to everyday situations.

Research suggests that inadequate sleep increases emotional reactivity and reduces communication between brain regions responsible for emotional regulation.

4. Brain fog has become your normal

Poor sleep doesn't just leave you feeling tired—it can also affect concentration, memory, decision-making and reaction time.

Dr Sood noted that studies have found consistently sleeping six hours or less per night can lead to cognitive impairment similar to going without sleep for two full nights.

5. You seem to get sick more often

Sleep plays an important role in supporting the immune system.

People who regularly get too little sleep may be more susceptible to common viral infections because the body has less time to repair itself and maintain healthy immune function.

When should you pay attention?

Dr Sood says no single symptom confirms sleep deprivation. However, if caffeine dependence, sugar cravings, irritability, brain fog and frequent illness begin occurring together, it may be time to evaluate both your sleep duration and sleep quality.

If these symptoms persist despite improving your sleep habits, consider speaking with a healthcare professional to rule out underlying sleep disorders or other medical conditions.
