Savannah Guthrie resumes 'Today' duties after intruder incident

Savannah Guthrie returned to the Today show on Monday, making her first appearance since an intruder breached NBC's Studio 1A in New York last week.

The longtime anchor opened the morning broadcast alongside Sheinelle Jones, who filled in for Craig Melvin as he began a previously scheduled family vacation.

Guthrie resumes hosting after studio security scare

Welcoming viewers back to the programme, Guthrie noted that Jones was sitting in for Melvin during his planned time off.

Her return comes days after a man allegedly entered the Today studio on July 16, confronted Melvin, shouted racial slurs and asked for Al Roker before security intervened.

Intruder faces hate crime charges

Authorities later identified the suspect as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove.

According to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, he has been charged with third-degree burglary as a hate crime and third-degree menacing as a hate crime. Prosecutors said temporary orders of protection have been issued for both Melvin and Roker.

If convicted, Truelove could face up to 15 years in prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 22.

Craig Melvin addressed the incident

Melvin returned to Today on July 17 and reassured viewers that everyone was safe following the security breach.

"You may have heard that unfortunately an intruder made his way into an unauthorized area here at Studio 1A," he said during the broadcast, adding that the suspect had been quickly arrested and that NBC was cooperating with investigators.

NBC News also confirmed that no one was injured during the incident and said it is reviewing its security procedures.

Guthrie to take more time off for new project

Although Guthrie has not publicly commented on the incident, she previously announced that she will soon step away from Today again to film the upcoming Wordle game show, which will be executive-produced by Jimmy Fallon.

The series is expected to premiere next year.
