Jon Stewart jokes World Cup final was the ‘reverse Super Bowl’
Comedian also mocked the halftime show and Trump's appearance
Jon Stewart kicked off Monday night's episode of The Daily Show by taking aim at the FIFA World Cup final, joking that the tournament's showpiece event felt like the "reverse Super Bowl."
The comedian was reacting to Spain's 1-0 victory over Argentina, which concluded the 2026 tournament on Sunday.
'The players spoke Spanish'
Reflecting on the match, Stewart joked that the biggest contrast with American football wasn't the game itself but the entertainment surrounding it.
"The Spain-Argentina final was like a reverse Super Bowl, where the players spoke Spanish and the halftime show was in English," he quipped.
The first-ever FIFA World Cup halftime show featured performances from Madonna, Justin Bieber, BTS and other guest stars.
Stewart pokes fun at the Muppets
Stewart also joked about the appearance of several Sesame Street and Muppet characters during the event, singling out The Count for a humorous observation.
He questioned why the vampire character had to appear during a daytime event, adding that a scoreless first half gave him little to count.
Trump also becomes a target
The late-night host later turned his attention to President Donald Trump, who attended the final and was present during the trophy presentation.
Stewart mocked Trump's appearance on stage after the match, joking that the celebration should have been reserved for the players rather than political figures.
His remarks came as part of a broader opening monologue reviewing some of the biggest talking points from the World Cup final.
Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy, while the event also featured a star-studded crowd and the tournament's inaugural halftime show.
