Jim Carrey pays heartfelt tribute to late director Chuck Russell

Jim Carrey paid tribute to The Mask director Chuck Russell following his death, describing it as "a privilege" to have worked with the filmmaker and praising the joyful atmosphere he created on set.

Carrey remembers Russell's playful filmmaking

In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Carrey reflected on making the 1994 comedy with Russell.

"I consider it a privilege to have worked with Chuck Russell," the actor said, adding that the director created a "childlike atmosphere of wonder and camaraderie" throughout production.

Carrey also said Russell's playful approach inspired both the cast and crew.

The Mask remains a career highlight

The actor described The Mask as one of the defining projects of his career.

He thanked Russell for helping create what he called "one of the jewels" of his creative life and said the film's lasting legacy continues to be cherished decades after its release.

The 1994 blockbuster also marked Cameron Diaz's feature film debut.

Russell's filmmaking legacy

Russell died unexpectedly at his home near San Diego on July 22, according to his family. A cause of death has not been announced.

The filmmaker made his directing debut with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors before going on to direct The Blob, The Mask, Eraser and The Scorpion King.

His work helped launch or shape the careers of several major Hollywood stars while spanning horror, action and comedy genres.
