Matt Damon teases mystery film after replacing Ryan Gosling
Matt Damon calls the secretive project a blend of 'The Breakfast Club', 'Inception' and anime
Matt Damon offered the first glimpse into his next film, describing the still-secret project as a genre-bending mix of The Breakfast Club, Inception, anime and even an unaired episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
The actor also confirmed his excitement about the movie after replacing Ryan Gosling, who exited the project earlier because of scheduling conflicts, as per Entertainment Weekly.
Matt Damon teases mystery film
Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show, Damon laughed as he recalled how the filmmakers pitched the movie to him.
"The way they pitched it to me was it's The Breakfast Club meets Inception meets an anime film meets an episode of The John Oliver Show that didn't get aired."
The untitled film is being directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the Oscar-winning duo behind Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Damon said audiences who enjoyed that film's unique blend of emotion and creativity would likely appreciate the new project as well.
"If you liked Everything Everywhere All at Once and all the wildness and all the heart, I think you'll really like this one, too. It's a really special project."
Damon replaced Ryan Gosling
Entertainment Weekly previously confirmed that Damon joined the film after Ryan Gosling stepped away due to scheduling conflicts.
Production reportedly secured a multimillion-dollar tax credit to film in Los Angeles, making it difficult to delay the shoot to accommodate Gosling's schedule.
During the interview, Damon said he chooses projects based on their overall quality rather than the physical demands of a role.
"I just, kind of, pick based on what I think is going to be a good movie."
Actor reflects on The Odyssey
Damon also discussed filming The Odyssey, saying the experience was physically demanding but rewarding.
He previously underwent a strict gluten-free diet and significant weight loss to portray Odysseus, with his transformation drawing widespread attention online.
Looking back on the production, Damon praised the atmosphere on set.
"It felt like every single person on that set felt lucky to be there."
He added that the cast and crew were exhausted by the end of filming but grateful to be part of such an ambitious project.
