Rosie O'Donnell recalls unforgettable evening with Delta Burke

Rosie O'Donnell has revealed that actress Delta Burke was the most unexpected guest she welcomed during the six-year run of The Rosie O'Donnell Show, praising the sitcom star for her warmth and generosity.

The 64-year-old comedian reflected on some of the biggest celebrities she interviewed between 1996 and 2002, including Tom Cruise, Madonna and Barbra Streisand, but said it was Burke who left the biggest personal impression.

"I would say Delta Burke," O'Donnell said, describing the Designing Women actress as "so kind and so nice and so funny."

Recalling Burke's 1996 appearance on the show, O'Donnell said the actress surprised her by asking about her evening plans after filming.

"She's the only person in the history of the show who said to me, 'What are you doing tonight for dinner?'" O'Donnell remembered.

After learning she planned to stay home with her child and order Chinese food, Burke asked if she could join them.

"'Could I come over? I have nothing to do,'" Burke said, according to O'Donnell.

The television host said the trio spent the evening eating Chinese takeaway together at her home, a gesture she has never forgotten.

"I just thought that was so unbelievable that she was so gregarious and connected and sweet. It was just a calm, loving night at home," O'Donnell said.

While Burke was her most surprising guest, O'Donnell named Martin Short as her all-time favourite interview.

"The best guest is Martin Short," she said. "All you have to do to Martin Short is say, 'Hi, Marty,' and then he'll make you die laughing. He's one of the nicest guys in showbiz too."

O'Donnell, who relocated to Ireland in early 2025, is currently back in New York performing her one-woman show, Common Knowledge, which explores her family life and personal journey.
