Beauty professionals highlighted several common lipstick application mistakes that cause lips to appear dry, uneven, or improperly defined. Skipping lip preparation, selecting unsuitable shades, overlining excessively, and layering too much product frequently compromise lip makeup results. Industry specialists noted that simple adjustments to daily techniques can ensure smoother application, extended wear, and a refined appearance.

"Good lipstick is not just determined by the colour selection but rather the preparation and application process that precedes it," Madnani said.

Lip prep often skipped

Madnani said the most frequent mistake is applying lipstick straight onto dry and peeling lips. "One of the most common mistakes that people make is the application of lipstick straight on dry and peeling lips," she said.

She added that exfoliation and moisturising are essential steps that should never be skipped for a polished lip makeup look. Many people also choose trending colours without considering their skin tone or the occasion, she noted.

Overapplication and missing lip liner

Overapplying product to extend wear time is another common habit, according to Madnani. "In addition, people tend to overapply makeup products in an attempt to extend their wear time, which, however, results in smudging and patchiness," she said.

She recommended applying thin layers, blotting, and building colour step-by-step instead. Skipping lip liner, particularly with bold shades, is a further mistake many make, she said.

Hygiene during application

Madnani also flagged cleanliness as an overlooked issue, especially when testing lipstick at beauty counters. "One of the habits that I would advise everyone to get rid of is applying lipstick straight away without considering cleanliness, especially at beauty counters," she said.

She stressed that lipstick should always be applied cleanly and in a way that complements the rest of one's makeup.

Choosing the right shade

Madnani said proper preparation, application and shade selection allow any lipstick to look good, feel comfortable and last longer. She added that makeup is not about trends but individuality.

Experts also recommend identifying skin undertone before buying: warm undertones suit coral, peach and terracotta shades, while cool undertones pair well with berry, plum and blue-based reds. Neutral undertones can wear most shades comfortably.

Nude lipsticks work best one or two shades deeper than natural lip colour, while richer skin tones can carry deeper browns and bold reds. Soft pinks and nudes suit everyday wear, while bolder reds and berries suit festive occasions. Matte finishes last longer, while glossy formulas add fullness, and dry lips benefit from cream-based formulas with shea butter or vitamin E.
