Look back at the life and legacy of blogging pioneer Jill Smokler

Remembering Jill Smokler, the pioneering Scary Mommy founder who redefined motherhood

By GH Web Desk

The blogging community is mourning the loss of Jill Smokler, the influential founder of the popular parenting website Scary Mommy, who has passed away at age 48 following a brave battle with brain cancer. Smokler launched the site as a simple blog, naming it after her son’s fears, but it quickly evolved into a massive online community. Her family shared that she spent nearly 20 years speaking the brutal truth about motherhood, saying the things mothers were not supposed to say out loud so millions of others felt allowed to say them too.

Smokler became a New York Times bestselling author before stepping away from the site in 2018. Following her terminal diagnosis in 2024, she faced severe health struggles, including seizures and memory loss. She is survived by her three children, Lily, Ben, and Evan, who remain endlessly proud of her incredible impact.
