Daniel Radcliffe reveals his younger, 'unhappy' self wouldn't recognise joy as a father

Daniel Radcliffe takes pride in how much he has evolved.

The 36-year-old performer, currently in the Broadway show Every Brilliant Thing, believes his younger version “would not have known” the man he is today.

“There were several points in my life when I felt extremely unhappy, especially at a younger age,” Radcliffe revealed during a discussion after the show on Tuesday, March 31, with Project Healthy Minds CEO Phil Schermer, moderated by PEOPLE Deputy News Director Dave Quinn.

“I spent today with my 3-year-old son walking down the street, with him just holding my hand, being adorable, fun, and a bit silly — and I’m incredibly happy,” he continued. “If you showed those moments to my 20-year-old self, I wouldn’t have recognised me.”

Performing in Every Brilliant Thing, a play that focuses on depression and mental health challenges, Radcliffe expressed that he represents the idea that transformation is possible.

“There is so much room for deep joy in the future, even if it's not evident right now,” he commented. “The future is always worth a chance to surprise you.”

Participating in the show and encouraging others to discuss their personal challenges has been especially significant for the Harry Potter actor.

“This show is the most profound and meaningful one I've ever participated in,” said Radcliffe.

“Connecting with others on [mental health] is quite rare. As a performer in this production, the opportunity to experience the brilliance and kindness in people is remarkable.”

Referring to the interactive nature of the production: “It’s incredibly special and unique. I get to meet many people before we start, have a little chat, and revisit those interactions throughout the performance. It's a level of connection with the audience I likely won't experience again.”

Every Brilliant Thing was written by Duncan Macmillan along with Jonny Donahoe and directed by Jeremy Herrin.

The play has been presented in over 80 countries and was turned into an HBO special featuring co-creator Donahoe. It was brought to Broadway after a successful West End run.
