Anderson .Paak details emotional journey of working with son on ‘K-Pops!’

Anderson .Paak has reflected on a deeply personal chapter of his career, sharing how working alongside his teenage son on the film K-Pops! became one of the most meaningful experiences of his life.

The Silk Sonic artist, 40, opened up about the project during an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, revealing that the film stars both him and his 15-year-old son, Soul Rasheed, in a story that blends music, comedy, and cultural identity.

According to .Paak, the film follows a washed-up musician who unexpectedly discovers he has a son with the potential to become a K-pop star — a storyline inspired in part by real-life family dynamics and creativity within their household.

He explained that Soul was around 11 years old when filming began, and that the project took roughly five years to complete from development through production.

Now 15, Soul appears alongside his father in the finished film, marking a rare father-son collaboration on screen.

Beyond the storyline, .Paak emphasized that K-Pops! was also designed to bridge cultural influences, particularly between Black American and Korean communities.

The artist, whose mother is Korean, said the film reflects both sides of his family heritage and celebrates a shared cultural space.

He also revealed that the idea for the project grew out of the COVID-19 pandemic, when his son expressed interest in creating YouTube content. What started as casual home videos soon evolved into a creative partnership that sparked the idea for a full-length screenplay.

“That’s when I realized how naturally talented he was,” .Paak shared, adding that the process reignited his own love for filmmaking and storytelling from his childhood.
