Olivia Rodrigo draws inspiration from 'Sex and the City' for upcoming album
The singer says multiple songs were inspired by 'Sex and the City'
Pop star Olivia Rodrigo has revealed that a beloved storyline from Sex and the City helped shape multiple songs on her upcoming third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
Appearing on The Tonight Show on April 30, Rodrigo said the relationship between characters Miranda and Steve, played by Cynthia Nixon and David Eigenberg, served as a key emotional influence on her songwriting.
“There’s actually multiple songs that are inspired by Miranda and Steve,” Rodrigo said, describing the couple’s on-again, off-again romance as deeply impactful on her creative process.
The Grammy-winning artist, 23, said she is a devoted fan of the series, calling it her “favorite show” and revealing she has watched the entire series multiple times.
Rodrigo recalled one particular storyline that inspired her most, referencing a scene where Miranda reflects emotionally on her relationship with Steve. “I remember watching that and being like, ‘Oh my God, I have to write a song about this,’” she said.
During the interview, host Jimmy Fallon also discussed the inspiration behind her upcoming tour, though Rodrigo remained tight-lipped about details, saying only that more information would be revealed soon.
The artist also spoke about her excitement for her next live performances, noting she has been working extensively on the project and is eager to bring the new music to the stage.
Rodrigo first announced her third album in April via Instagram, describing it as a project she is deeply proud of. The lead single, Drop Dead, was released shortly after.
You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love is scheduled for release on June 12 and marks Rodrigo’s third full-length studio album, continuing her rise as one of pop music’s most influential young voices.
