Rapper Rob Base dead at 59 following private cancer diagnosis
The rapper passed away days after celebrating his 59th birthday, his family confirmed
Rob Base, best known as one-half of the influential hip-hop duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, has died at the age of 59 following a private battle with cancer.
The rapper, whose real name was Robert Ginyard, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, according to a statement shared on the group’s official Instagram account. His death came just days after he celebrated his 59th birthday on May 18.
“Today, we share the heartbreaking news that hip hop legend Rob Base passed away peacefully… surrounded by family after a private battle with cancer,” the statement read.
The tribute described Base as a pioneering figure whose music and energy helped define a generation, adding that his work brought joy to millions worldwide.
“Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world,” the statement continued. “Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten.”
His son, Rob Ginyard Jr., also confirmed the news on social media, writing, “Sleep in peace dad. I love you.”
Rob Base rose to fame in the late 1980s alongside DJ E-Z Rock, born Rodney Bryce, with the duo becoming widely known for their 1988 breakout hit It Takes Two. The track became a defining anthem of the era, peaking on music charts, achieving platinum certification, and later being sampled and featured across film and music for decades.
The duo first began collaborating in the mid-1980s in Harlem, where they met as schoolchildren before forming their partnership.
DJ E-Z Rock died in 2014 at the age of 56 due to complications from diabetes.
In recent years, Ginyard remained creatively active, including work as an executive producer on the 2025 horror film Urban Flesh Eaters.
