Olivia Rodrigo addresses speculation over song title ‘The Cure’

Olivia Rodrigo has addressed speculation surrounding her latest single The Cure, insisting the track is not connected to the band of the same name despite her close friendship with frontman Robert Smith.

The 23-year-old singer released the song on Friday (May 22, 2026) as the second single from her upcoming album You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love. However, she clarified that the title is purely coincidental and not a reference to Smith’s legendary band The Cure.

Speaking on The Elvis Duran Show, Rodrigo said, “Honestly, this song, ‘The Cure,’ has nothing to do with the band. Although I love it so much, it just is a happy coincidence.”

She added that the track reflects a new emotional perspective in her songwriting, one she felt she was not ready to express in earlier work.

“It’s a new perspective that I haven’t had the maturity to express before in earlier albums,” she said.

Rodrigo also emphasized that her friendship with Smith remains strong, revealing that the two remain in regular contact. “I love him. We talk like every week. He’s amazing,” she added.

Smith has previously spoken warmly about Rodrigo’s music, revealing in an interview that he purchased her albums Sour and Guts on CD and praising her songwriting ability despite noting it may not be aimed at his generation.

He also said the two have spent time together discussing music and fashion.

Rodrigo herself had previously described The Cure as one of her favorite songs she has ever written, sharing her excitement ahead of its release on social media.

The single follows the earlier release of Drop Dead and serves as part of her upcoming third studio album, which she has described as more experimental and rooted in themes of romantic love, jealousy, longing, and emotional complexity.
