Ed Sheeran beats global stars to retain UK radio crown
The singer has been named the UK’s most-played artist for an eighth time
Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has once again dominated the UK airwaves, being crowned the country’s most-played artist of 2025 for a record-extending eighth time.
The 35-year-old global star topped PPL’s annual chart, which tracks music played across radio, television, and public venues, beating out major international artists including Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, Calvin Harris and Lady Gaga.
According to the report, Sheeran’s music was played an average of 574 times per day across the UK—equivalent to roughly 24 plays every hour—highlighting his continued dominance on playlists from radio stations to pubs and public venues.
Reacting to the achievement, Sheeran said he was “so grateful” for the continued support from broadcasters and listeners over the past 15 years.
“I am so grateful to be named most-played artist across TV, radio and venues across the UK for an incredible eighth time,” he said, adding thanks to those who have consistently played his music.
The PPL rankings also featured strong competition in the top 10, with acts such as Coldplay, Elton John, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and David Guetta all securing spots among the most-played artists.
A breakout moment in the rankings came from rising star Myles Smith, whose track Nice To Meet You was named the most-played song of 2025. Smith said the success still feels “unreal,” as he continues to build momentum in his career.
His follow-up single Stargazing also made the Top 10, alongside other standout tracks from artists including Lola Young, Alex Warren and Sam Fender.
The announcement comes shortly after Sheeran confirmed he has parted ways with Warner Music Group after a 15-year partnership, describing the decision as a personal step tied to family life and growth rather than any dispute.
