Inde Navarrete opens up about struggles getting into character in thriller 'Obsession'

Inde Navarrete has revealed that stepping into her role in the psychological thriller Obsession left her feeling “terrified,” admitting that the character she played was so unsettling it even affected her off-screen mindset.

The 25-year-old actress, who gained wider recognition following her performance in the hit film, said she struggled at times while preparing for the role of Nikki Freeman due to the intensity of the material.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Navarrete said she was initially hesitant about fully committing to the character’s darker emotional space, describing the preparation process as overwhelming.

“I was absolutely terrified to do it, I did not want to do it,” she said, recalling her early attempts to get into character.

She explained that her director encouraged her to practice scenes privately, but even then, she found the experience deeply uncomfortable.

“I’ll be totally honest and give you an exclusive here, Curry told me to go home and go practice in the mirror… I was terrified to do it,” she said.

Navarrete added that although she tried to approach the role professionally, the psychological weight of the character often made her uneasy.

“I did not want to do it because it would just freak me out,” she said. “It’s just a freaky thing to do.”

The 13 Reasons Why alum also admitted that she sometimes concealed her struggles from the director, fearing she might disappoint him if she revealed how difficult she found the role.

Despite her initial fears, Navarrete’s performance in Obsession has contributed to the film’s strong reception, with the thriller being widely discussed as one of the standout horror-leaning releases of the year.
