Megan Thee Stallion brought Radio City Music Hall to its feet after making a showstopping surprise appearance during the opening number of the 79th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday night, which aired live on CBS and Paramount+ from New York City.
The 31-year-old rapper emerged as the undisputed talking point of the evening after strutting onto the stage in a sparkling black corset bodysuit, complete with fishnet tights, dramatic garters, sequined detailing and towering heels — a look that channelled the full Parisian cabaret glamour of Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
A Moulin Rouge moment on the Tonys stage
Megan joined first-time host Pink for a remixed rendition of Lady Marmalade, the iconic Moulin Rouge anthem, as more than 170 Broadway performers filled the stage in feathered costumes and red velvet-inspired outfits.
The Grammy-winning rapper drew roaring applause at several points during the number after breaking into her signature twerk moves. At one moment, cameras cut to stunned audience members cheering and laughing as Megan was bleeped following an on-air F-bomb during the live broadcast.
Pink, meanwhile, launched the ceremony by soaring above the audience in a Peter Pan costume and harness before leading a theatrical musical mashup packed with celebrity cameos — including Mormon Wives breakout Whitney Leavitt, who appeared in her Roxie Hart costume from Chicago, and Lea Michele, who delivered a surprise vocal performance.
The sprawling opener also featured tributes to Chicago, Rent, A Chorus Line and several of the night's most prominent nominated productions.
Fans react online
Social media lit up almost immediately after the number aired, with viewers heaping praise on the campy energy of the performance and crowning Megan the breakout star of the night.
"One thing Megan Thee Stallion is gonna do is commit to the performance."
"Megan twerking at the Tony Awards was NOT on my bingo card but she ate."
"Broadway just became the Hot Girl Theater."
Others reserved their praise for the host, with one viewer describing the opener as "the most fun opening number in years."
A history-making Broadway run
Megan's Tony Awards appearance came just weeks after she concluded a history-making stint in Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Broadway, during which she became the first female-identifying performer ever to play the role of Zidler in any production of the show anywhere in the world.
Dylan Mulvaney and Neil Patrick Harris also featured among those who appeared onstage during the 79th Annual Tony Awards ceremony at Radio City Music Hall on 7 June 2026.
