Finneas shares advice he’s been giving Billie Eilish about music creativity
The musician opens up about guiding artists while working in production
Finneas has shared insight into the advice he has recently been giving his sister Billie Eilish, reflecting on creativity, technical knowledge, and the balance artists must strike when making music.
The 28-year-old producer and musician spoke about his approach during an appearance on Billboard’s On the Record podcast, where he discussed his work as a producer and long-time collaborator with his sister.
Finneas, who has co-written and produced several of Billie Eilish’s biggest hits, said that experience and technical understanding can sometimes be both a help and a limitation for artists.
“There are pros and cons to the lack of technical vernacular,” he said, explaining that over time he has increasingly helped Billie better understand her own vocal production.
“I’ve said this to Billie a lot lately, because over the course of the three albums we’ve made, I’ve hipped her to more and more of her own vocal engineering,” he added.
He noted that while Billie has developed a strong ear for music, making production more efficient, there is also a creative trade-off that comes with deeper technical knowledge.
“She’s got a great ear, and it just makes her life 20 seconds faster all the time,” he said.
Finneas went on to explain that one of his key reflections has been how increased technical awareness can sometimes limit artistic imagination.
“One of the things I said to her was, one of the challenges with the more you know is the less you imagine,” he said. “So what I want is for an artist to just be purely imaginative.”
