Matt Damon mistaken for Brad Pitt during World Cup 2026 final

Matt Damon was mistakenly identified as Brad Pitt during the World Cup 2026 final after a Fox Sports commentator confused the Hollywood stars while the broadcast highlighted celebrities in the crowd.

The mix-up happened during Sunday's final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Damon attended the match with his wife, Luciana Barroso Damon.

Commentator quickly corrected on air

Fox Sports commentator John Strong introduced Damon as Pitt before co-commentator Stu Holden immediately corrected him.

"That's Matt Damon!" Holden interjected after Strong mistakenly identified the The Odyssey star.

Strong later laughed off the error while the cameras focused on another celebrity in the crowd.

"I'm letting you take the rest of these guys," he joked to Holden. "I got cocky after the first three, and I missed an absolute sitter."

Damon joined star-studded World Cup crowd

Damon was among several celebrities attending the World Cup final, alongside Tom Cruise, Blake Lively, Bruno Mars, Timothée Chalamet, Kylie Jenner, David Beckham, Victoria Beckham, Tom Brady and Jason Sudeikis, who appeared in character as Ted Lasso.

The match also featured the first FIFA World Cup halftime show, with performances from Madonna, Justin Bieber, BTS, Shakira and Jennifer Hudson.

Argentina has special meaning for Damon's family

The actor's wife, Luciana, is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and attended the match wearing her country's colours.

Speaking on Late Night with Seth Meyers before the final, Damon joked that his family's celebration after Argentina defeated England in the semi-finals was so loud it frightened their dogs.

Spain ultimately defeated Argentina to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy.
