Mother pleads guilty after son dies in hot Iowa garage

An Iowa mother pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter after her three-year-old son died inside a hot garage while she was taking a nap on June 28, 2025. Tiffani Huff Holmes, 41, entered the guilty plea to an aggravated misdemeanour charge in court, stepping down from an original felony charge of child endangerment resulting in death.

Local NBC affiliate WHO reported that Holmes faces up to two years behind bars when she receives her formal sentence on Aug. 28. A criminal complaint detailed that Holmes knowingly left her son alone at a residential home located in the 24000 block of Hawthorn Drive in Bondurant, resulting in hyperthermia that caused the child's death.

The Des Moines Register reported that search warrant documents indicated the toddler overheated inside a closed garage on a day outdoor temperatures reached 91 degrees. Holmes stated to investigators that she slept during the afternoon but could not recall the duration of her nap. Upon waking up, she went into the garage and discovered her son unresponsive in a lawn chair.

The search warrant stated that the boy was extremely sweaty, hot to the touch, and had blue lips when Holmes found him. Holmes waited approximately five to ten minutes before calling emergency services. Emergency dispatchers instructed her to move her son inside the house to administer CPR. Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene shortly after, but lifesaving efforts failed, and paramedics pronounced the child dead at the residence.

Investigators located a mostly empty vodka bottle inside the house during their search. Holmes claimed she drank the alcohol only after finding her son dead. The boy's father told investigators that the toddler would not enter the garage voluntarily and lacked the physical capability to open doors, noting that the garage door was broken and required manual lifting to open.
