Selena Gomez has opened up about the “pressure to meet” certain beauty standards in the entertainment industry.

The makeup mogul also shared her “self-acceptance” journey by challenging the “unrealistic” beauty standards.

Gomez recently confirmed a six-month romance with producer Benny Blanco.

During a dialogue with PEOPLE, the Only Murders in the Building starlet said, “My fundamental belief is that everyone possesses a unique and rare quality, and feeling beautiful doesn't require conforming to one specific look.”

She continued, “I personally experienced the pressure to meet certain appearance expectations growing up, which made me want to challenge the unrealistic standards of perfection in the beauty industry. With Rare Beauty, I get to use beauty and makeup to break down these ideals. I'm focused on creating positive conversations about mental health and self-acceptance.”

Gomez expressed her desire to play a part in “breaking the stigma” around mental health and mental illness.

The Calm Down crooner was asked about her biggest learning lessons as a beauty entrepreneur.

“I learn something new all of the time and I have to say launching Rare Beauty has been one of the biggest gifts to me personally and professionally. I’d say the biggest thing I learned from the very beginning is often things don’t go as planned and you have to learn to be flexible and adapt,” she replied.

The Rare Beauty founder noted, “I also love hearing from our community and getting their feedback- it’s been an extremely important part of how we move forward as a company.”
