Dwayne Johnson, widely known as The Rock, is set to step into the cage as he takes on the riveting role of MMA legend Mark Kerr in the upcoming movie The Smashing Machine.

A24 announced Wednesday that the wrestler-turned-actor, 51, will portray the MMA and UFC champion in the upcoming film The Smashing Machine from filmmaker Benny Safdie.

According to the statement by The Hollywood Reporter and Variety A24's Noah Sacco said, "Dwayne and Benny are singular talents, and their shared vision for Mark’s inspiring story is electrifying. We are deeply honored to have their trust as collaborators in bringing this incredibly special project to life.”

Safdie, having collaborated with his brother Josh Safdie in co-directing films like Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler and Good Time starring Robert Pattinson, is embarking on his inaugural independent venture as both writer and director with The Smashing Machine

Joining forces as producers for the film are Johnson, Safdie, Dany Garcia, Eli Bush, and David Koplan.

The upcoming movie is poised to delve into the life of Mark Kerr during the zenith of his career in the year 2000, capturing the intricacies of his professional triumphs, romantic entanglements, enduring friendships, and battles with addiction.

The 54-year-old boxer gained the moniker The Smashing Machine as a result of his unrestrained fighting approach.

He secured more than two dozen MMA titles and clinched the title of two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion, along with being a victorious participant in the World Vale Tudo Championship tournament.

In 2002, HBO produced a documentary titled The Smashing Machine centered around Kerr.

The documentary chronicled his journey in the MMA realm, highlighting his ascent in the sport, while also delving into Kerr's struggles with addiction, ultimately culminating in an overdose.
