Gru and his Minions are returning to the big screen!

Universal and Illumination released the first trailer for their upcoming movie titled, Despicable Me 4 on January 28, 2024, Sunday.

"In the first Despicable Me movie in seven years, Gru, the world’s favorite supervillain-turned-Anti-Villain League-agent, returns for an exciting, bold new era of Minions mayhem in Illumination’s Despicable Me 4," the official description of the trailer uploaded on YouTube read.

The Despicable Me franchise features the characters Gru, who adopted three daughters named Margo, Edith and Agnes. The film’s second installment showed Gru finding love with Lucy Wilde, whom he married later.

Despicable Me 4 is the fourth installment of the franchise where Gru and Lucy welcome the newest addition to the family: their son, Gru Jr.

The trailer shows Gru entering with his hands loaded with groceries as he said, “Hello everybody. Wait a minute, three girls,” as the screen shows his three adopted daughters.

“One wife,” he says as Lucy can be seen smiling with adoration, “something is missing,” he further says.

Lucy responds, “This guy,” as she turns around revealing their son, Gru Jr.

Despicable Me 4 also introduced new characters in the film voiced by Will Ferrell, Joey King, Sofia Vergara, Stephen Colbert, Chloe Fineman and Madison Polan.

Ferrell voices Gru’s new nemesis of the film, Maxime Le Mal, while Vergara voices Maxime’s femme fatale girlfriend, Valentina.

In a movie review for Variety, Peter Debruge wrote, “On the surface, the Despicable Me cartoons appear to be sendups of the James Bond franchise, but beneath that slick, spoofy exterior, they’re really marshmallow-centered affirmations of good old-fashioned family values.”

The upcoming film will hit theaters on July 3, 2024 which is set to continue the popular animated franchise, following the storyline where the supervillain Gru, had a change of heart and is now trying to do good.
