OpenAI to phase out its largest-ever AI model ‘GPT-4.5’

OpenAI has announced that it will phase out its largest-ever artificial intelligence (AI) model, GPT-4.5, from its API.

The phase-out of GPT-4.5 marks a shift towards more efficient and cost-effective models in the company's offerings.

Released in late February, the AI model will no longer be available via the API starting July 14. Developers will need to transition to another model in OpenAI's catalog, with GPT-4.1 being the preferred replacement.

According to the company, GPT-4.1 offers similar or improved performance to GPT-4.5 in key areas at a lower cost.

It should be noted that OpenAI is prioritising the development of future models, which is why they are deprecating GPT-4.5.

To note, GPT-4.5 will still be available in ChatGPT for paying customers. The AI model's high cost and computing power requirements made it expensive to run, with prices set at $75 per million input tokens and $150 per million output tokens.

For the unversed, GPT-4.5, also known as Orion, was trained using significant computing power and data.

While it improved upon its predecessor in areas such as writing and coding, it fell short of the "frontier level" on several industry benchmarks.

Moreover, starting April 30, OpenAI will replace the AI model GPT-4 with GPT-4o, the current default model in ChatGPT, which has shown superior performance in writing, coding, and problem-solving tasks.
