OpenAI exec claims AI now handles '80% of your code writing'

AI tools for coding have seen significant advancements lately, mentions OpenAI's president.

During a Sequoia Capital discussion released on Thursday, Greg Brockman mentioned that AI has grown beyond just an assisting tool for software developers.

"Even just reviewing December, we've transitioned from these AI-driven coding utilities contributing 20% to around 80% of your code," Brockman explained. "That transforms them from being on the sidelines to becoming the main focus of your work."

Brockman, who helped initiate the AI firm in 2015, advised entrepreneurs to "embrace" and adopt AI innovations because they are evolving swiftly.

For illustration, he noted, Codex — OpenAI's system for generating code — has recently transitioned from serving mainly software developers to helping "any individual working with a computer."

Nonetheless, Brockman underscored that OpenAI maintains human oversight for all merged code.

"The idea isn't to just 'carelessly use' or 'completely ignore' these tools. Neither approach is appropriate," he explained regarding AI-written code.

AI's expanding involvement in software writing

Brockman joins a cadre of tech innovators lauding AI's potential to produce a significant segment of a company's coding output.

Just last month, Google CEO Sundar Pichai remarked that 75% of fresh code crafted within the company is now AI-generated and subsequently vetted by human developers.

This percentage has seen a swift rise over recent years, soaring from 25% in 2024 to 50% last year.

Meta is looking to advance in this field as well.

As reported in March by Business Insider, Meta intended 65% of engineers in its creation organisation — tasked with crafting and sustaining core inventive experiences — to produce over 75% of their code contributions utilizing AI.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has also anticipated the extent of code AI would generate.

"I anticipate that in three to six months, AI will account for 90% of coding tasks. And within a year, we might find ourselves in a circumstance where nearly all code is AI-generated," Amodei commented during a conference last year.

Earlier this year, Amodei penned in a blog post: "Given that AI now generates much of the code at Anthropic, it's significantly hastening our progress in crafting the next generation of AI technologies."
