The latest beta version of Android 16 has revealed a new feature called “Android Desktop Mode,” which allows users to transform their smartphones into desktop computers.

By simply plugging a smartphone into a monitor, Android users might be able to access a PC-like interface, complete with a taskbar, windowed apps, and native navigation buttons.

Discovered by Android Authority, the feature is similar to Samsung's DeX feature, which enables Galaxy smartphones to be docked into a monitor for a desktop-like experience.

The Android Desktop Mode allows apps to run in windowed modes, with features like snapping windows to the left and right of the screen.

While this cutting-edge feature looks promising, it might not be ready for launch with Android 16, which is expected to debut this spring.

Instead, the feature will likely be released in a quarterly update or as part of Android 17, which is likely to launch in 2026.

It is worth mentioning that the development of Android Desktop Mode suggests Google is working to blur the lines between smartphones and desktop computers, offering users more flexibility and productivity options.
