Elon Musk celebrates Tesla’s first fully autonomous car delivery
Tesla has officially completed what it claims is the world’s first fully autonomous vehicle delivery, sending an electric car from its Gigafactory in Texas directly to a customer’s home without any human inside or remote operation involved.
The Tesla CEO Elon Musk proudly announced the milestone on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a groundbreaking moment in automotive history.
“This Tesla drove itself from Gigafactory Texas to its new owner's home, 30 minutes away, crossing parking lots, highways, and city roads,” Tesla shared in a post, along with a video of the journey and a photo of the customer standing beside the newly delivered vehicle.
Musk celebrated the achievement, saying, “The first fully autonomous delivery of a Tesla Model Y from factory to a customer home across town, including highways, was just completed a day ahead of schedule!”
He emphasised that the car had no one inside and no remote supervision during the trip. “Fully autonomous,” he stressed.
Tesla’s director of Autopilot software, Ashok Elluswamy, noted the vehicle hit speeds up to 72 mph during the journey.
While the event was hailed as a major advancement by Tesla supporters, online reactions were mixed.
Many praised the technological feat, but others were quick to point out that Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous vehicle division, has been running similar operations for years.
“Waymo did this in 2012,” one user commented, while another joked, “Elon is now shipping things ahead of schedule.”
In other news, Tesla also recently launched a Robotaxi service in Austin within a geofenced area, signaling its ambition to expand self-driving offerings to the public soon.
