UK proposes stricter oversight of Apple and Google’s mobile platforms

The United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has proposed designating Apple’s and Google’s mobile ecosystems as having “strategic market status,” a classification that would give the regulator broad powers to implement new rules aimed at fostering competition.

The CMA announced the proposal as part of a broader effort to create a fairer and more open app economy.

If the designation is approved, the CMA would be able to impose regulations that could significantly reshape how Apple and Google manage their app stores and mobile operating systems.

These rules might include reforms to app store commission structures, transparency in app rankings, improved access to certain device features for developers, and changes to default settings that may currently limit competition.

Apple and Google have both raised concerns over the proposal. Apple, in particular, has argued that the suggested changes could undermine user privacy and weaken the security of its devices.

The companies are expected to formally respond to the CMA’s proposals before a final decision is made in October.

CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, a vocal critic of the tech giants and a participant in global antitrust battles, criticised the proposal for not going far enough.

He expressed disappointment that the plan does not open the door for alternative app marketplaces, such as the Epic Games Store, to compete directly with Apple’s App Store and Google Play.

It should be noted that the CMA will review industry feedback before finalising its decision.
