YouTube Shorts introduces AI-powered image-to-video feature

In a remarkable development, YouTube Shorts has unveiled a new suite of generative AI features for creators, including an image-to-video AI tool and cutting AI effects.

The new image-to-video feature allows users to convert a picture from the camera roll into a six-second video.

The feature analyses the uploaded image and offers animation suggestions based on its content, making it easier for creators to breathe life into static visuals.

According to the Google-owned video platform, this new feature can be used to add movement to landscape photos, animate pictures of everyday photos, or bring group photos to life.

For instance, one demonstration showed a pedestrian signal image transforming into a short animation where the walking symbol begins to dance.

The image-to-video capability mirrors similar tools found in other AI platforms, such as Meta’s Animate feature in its Edits app and Google’s Gemini offerings.

The feature is currently rolling out to users in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with global expansion expected later this year.

In addition to the video creation tool, YouTube has introduced new AI-driven visual effects.

Creators can use these to turn rough sketches into polished digital art or transform selfies into immersive scenes, like swimming underwater or syncing movements with another person.

These effects can be accessed through the Shorts camera by selecting the “Effects” icon and navigating to the “AI” section.
